How to use a dual stimulation vibrator, step by step

A dual stimulation toy has two parts that work together: one goes inside the vagina, and the other rests on the outside, over the clitoris. That's what makes it popular, and it's also why the first few times can feel awkward. There are two places to think about at once, two sets of controls and a toy that has to sit at the right angle.

This guide is about using one, once it's in your hands. If you're still choosing between our two, Peak and Glow, our side-by-side guide to dual stimulation toys covers that decision. Here we go step by step, from getting ready to cleaning up, with what to try when something doesn't fit.

In this article

How a dual toy works with your body

Most of the clitoris is out of sight. Cleveland Clinic explains that the glans sits on the outside, under a hood of skin, while the internal part wraps around your vagina. A dual toy is shaped around that: the outside part reaches the glans, and the inside part sits in the vagina, which the internal clitoris wraps around.

Your body also changes as you become aroused, and that matters a lot for comfort. Cleveland Clinic's page on the vagina says it expands and becomes lubricated when you're aroused, and that it's about 3 to 4 inches deep unaroused and can stretch to about 4 to 8 inches when aroused. Inserting a toy before that change has had time to happen can make a first try uncomfortable. That's why the steps below start on the outside and add the inside part later.

Getting ready

Charge it. Peak charges in about 90 minutes and runs about an hour with both motors at the highest speed. Glow charges in about 2 hours and also runs about an hour with both motors at the highest speed.

Wash it before the first use. Use a toy cleaner or mild soap and warm water, rinse, and let it dry. Both are waterproof, so rinsing them at the sink is fine.

Get to know the buttons first. With the toy still off your body, switch each motor on and off and run through its speeds. Peak has three kinds of stimulation (10 vibration modes, a 3-speed internal thumping motion and a 3-speed air pulse) that run alone or together. Glow has two independent motors, an internal vibration and an external air pulse, with 10 speeds each. Knowing which button does what saves you from fumbling later.

Have lube within reach. You'll want more than you think, mostly for the inside part.

Step by step, the first time

  1. Start with the outside part only. Turn on the external stimulation at its lowest setting and rest it over the clitoris or just beside it. Take your time. This is where arousal builds.
  2. Add lube to the inside part. Coat the shaft generously with a water-based lube, and add a little at the opening of the vagina too.
  3. Insert slowly, with the motors off or low. Breathe out as you go and use your hand to guide the angle. Go only as far as feels comfortable. You don't need to insert the whole shaft for it to work.
  4. Let the outside part settle. Once the inside part is in, adjust until the outside part rests over the clitoris. Peak bends, which helps you adjust the angle between the two parts.
  5. Turn on the inside motor, at its lowest setting. On Glow, that's the internal vibration. On Peak, try the thumping motion or the vibration and see which you prefer. Peak's vibration runs through the whole toy, so you feel it in both parts.
  6. Combine them slowly. Raise one motor a step, wait, then the other, so you can tell which change you liked.
  7. Hold it still, or move it gently. Some people like the toy held in place while the motors do the work. Others like slow movement in and out, or a gentle rocking that changes the pressure outside.

If it feels like too much

Turn the outside part down first. The glans has about 10,000 nerve endings, according to Cleveland Clinic, so the outside part often feels stronger than the inside part. You can also tilt the toy so the outside part rests beside the clitoris rather than on it.

If you're not feeling much

Stay with it a few minutes longer first. After that, try a little more pressure on the outside part, a different angle inside, or a step up in speed. Research on women's preferences found diverse preferences for genital touch location, pressure, shape and pattern, so what works for someone else may not be your setting.

Positions that make it easier

The best position is the one that lets you hold the toy steady without straining your wrist.

On your back, knees bent. The most common starting point. Your hand reaches easily, and you can see what you're doing. A pillow under your hips can change the angle and take pressure off your arm.

On your side, knees drawn up. A relaxed position if lying on your back makes you tense. It also works well for longer sessions.

Sitting up against pillows. Some people find it easier to guide the angle when they're half sitting.

Face down, with the toy between you and the bed. The bed holds the outside part in place, so you can rock your hips to change the pressure. Keep the speeds low until you know how it feels, since the pressure adds up.

When it doesn't line up

Bodies differ, and the distance between the vaginal opening and the clitoris varies from person to person. If the outside part lands too high or too low, here is what usually helps.

What happens Why it may happen What to try
The outside part sits above the clitoris The gap on the toy is wider than your own Insert a little less deeply, or bend Peak to change the angle
The outside part sits below the clitoris The gap on the toy is narrower than your own Insert a little more, or tilt the handle toward your body
The inside part feels uncomfortable Not enough arousal or lube yet Stop, add lube, go back to the outside part for a while
The outside part feels too strong The glans is very sensitive Lower the external setting, or rest it to one side
It keeps slipping in your hand Lube on the handle makes it hard to grip Wipe the handle dry and hold it near the base
One motor drowns out the other The settings aren't balanced Lower the stronger one before raising the other

If the fit still isn't right after a few tries, use the toy for one part at a time. Both Peak and Glow let you run each kind of stimulation on its own, so the toy stays useful even when you only want the outside or only the inside.

Size is part of fit too. Peak is 8.5 inches long and 1.2 inches across and bends to adjust the angle. Glow is compact, 3.9 by 3.15 by 1.3 inches. One Glow buyer wrote that it "fits comfortably, even if you're usually not into penetration." (verified buyer, February 2026).

Using it with a partner

A dual toy can be part of partnered sex too, as long as the person using it stays in charge of the pace.

  • Show your partner what works first. Use it alone a few times, then show them the settings and the angle you like.
  • Let the person receiving decide the speed. Speak up early, before something feels like too much.
  • Use plenty of lube on the inside part, and use a condom on the toy if you share it with a partner.

After you're done

Turn it off before you remove it. Then ease it out slowly, the same way it went in.

Wash it right away. Use a toy cleaner or mild soap and warm water, working into the crease where the two parts meet, since lube collects there. Rinse well and let it air dry completely. Our toy cleaning guide covers the details.

Charge it only when it's completely dry, with no water left near the charging point.

Put it away separately, in a pouch or a drawer; Glow has its own round carrying and charging case.

About lube. Peak and Glow are silicone, so reach for a water-based lube; silicone lube isn't recommended with silicone toys and takes more washing to get off. Our guide to which lube is safe with toys and condoms explains the pairings. The aloe version of our Honey is water-based and works with every toy material.

When to stop

A dual toy should never hurt. Stop if you feel sharp pain, burning, or pain deep inside.

Pain during sex is common. ACOG, the US organization of obstetrician-gynecologists, says that when you cannot relax, arousal is difficult, and pain may result, and it suggests using a lubricant and trying sexual activities that don't cause pain. If penetration hurts often, use only the outside part for now, and see a doctor or an ob-gyn, especially if the pain is frequent or severe.

See a doctor too if you notice bleeding that isn't your period, or irritation or soreness that lasts more than a day or two. Ask your doctor before you use any toy inside the body if you're pregnant, have recently given birth or had surgery, or have a pelvic condition.

Peak is $159 CAD ($119 USD), with 18 reviews averaging 4.89 on our store. One buyer, a year in, wrote: "I have been using it for a year and still love it as much as the first time" (verified buyer, June 2026). Another found it can feel intense for sensitive users, which is one more reason to start every setting low. Full details are on the Peak page.

Frequently asked questions

How do you use a dual stimulation vibrator for the first time?

Start with the outside part only, at a low setting, until you feel aroused. Then add water-based lube to the inside part, insert it slowly, and adjust so the outside part rests over the clitoris. Turn the inside motor on low, then raise each motor one step at a time.

How far should a dual stimulation toy go in?

Only as far as feels comfortable. You don't need to insert the whole shaft, and the outside part usually lines up before that. The vagina is about 3 to 4 inches deep unaroused and can stretch to about 4 to 8 inches when aroused, which is why warming up first makes insertion easier.

Why doesn't the outside part reach my clitoris?

Because the distance between the vaginal opening and the clitoris varies from person to person. Try inserting a little more or less, tilting the handle toward your body, or bending the toy if it bends, as Peak does. If it still doesn't line up, use each part on its own.

Which motor should I turn on first?

The outside one, at its lowest setting. It helps arousal build, which makes insertion more comfortable. Add the inside motor once the toy is in place, then raise one motor at a time so you can tell which change you like.

Can I use a dual stimulation vibrator with a partner?

Yes. Use it alone a few times first so you know your settings, then show your partner the angle and speeds you like. The person receiving should set the pace. Use plenty of water-based lube, and put a condom on the toy if you share it.

Is it normal for a dual stimulation toy to feel uncomfortable at first?

Some awkwardness while you find the angle is normal, but pain isn't. Discomfort usually means you need more arousal, more lube or a shallower angle. Stop if it hurts, and see a doctor if penetration is often painful or you notice bleeding or soreness that lasts.
